Khajuraho Temples

The Khajuraho Group of Monuments, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is undoubtedly the crown jewel of Chhatarpur. These temples, built between 950 and 1050 CE during the  Chandela dynasty, are renowned for their exquisite erotic sculptures and intricate carvings. There are around 25 surviving temples, with the most famous being the Kandariya Mahadeva Temple, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The area around the falls is rich in natural beauty, with lush greenery and dramatic rock formations. Visitors can enjoy picnicking, trekking, and photography in this serene environment.

Chaturbhuj Temple

Located in the village of Khajuraho, the Chaturbhuj Temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. This temple is unique as it showcases a different architectural style compared to other Khajuraho temples. Built on a raised platform, the temple features intricate carvings and a towering shikhara (spire). The temple is less crowded than others, providing a peaceful atmosphere for visitors to admire its beauty.

Bamitha

Bamitha is a historical site near Khajuraho, featuring ancient temples and ruins that date back to the 10th century. The site is less known than the Khajuraho temples but offers a glimpse into the architectural brilliance of that era. The temples here are adorned with beautiful carvings and sculptures, making it an interesting place for history buffs and archaeology enthusiasts.

Dhubela Museum

Dhubela Museum, located in a historical palace, showcases artefacts and exhibits related to the region’s history and culture. The museum houses sculptures, inscriptions, and paintings from the time of the Chandela rulers. Visitors can learn about the rich heritage of Chhatarpur and the artistic achievements of its past.

Mahoba

Mahoba, situated near Chhatarpur, is known for its historical significance and beautiful landscapes. The region is dotted with ancient temples and ruins, including the famous Bada Sagar Lake. The lake is surrounded by scenic hills and offers opportunities for boating and picnicking. Mahoba is also famous for its connection to the legends of the Rajputs and the famous warrior king, Chandela.

Kalinjar Fort

Kalinjar Fort, located about 50 kilometres from Chhatarpur, is a historical fort that dates back to the 5th century. Perched atop a hill, the fort offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Visitors can explore the ancient structures, temples, and bastions within the fort. The fort is steeped in history and is believed to have been a significant stronghold during various dynasties.

Ken Gharial Sanctuary

The Ken Gharial Sanctuary, located along the banks of the Ken River, is dedicated to the conservation of the gharial, a critically endangered crocodile species. Kandariya Mahadev Temple
